PARIS — Barbara Masarik has been named Veteran of the Month at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris. Masarik was born on April 12, 1928 in Quincy, Mass. After attending high school she went to work for Howard Johnson’s Co. and worked as a stenographer.

Barbara enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1949. Her occupation was a link trainer operator and mechanic and she instructed others on how to run a flight stimulator, which involves teaching them how to fly by instruments. She received the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged in 1953.

Barbara came to the Maine Veterans’ Home in November 2008 and currently resides on the B-Unit. She has enjoyed knitting, sewing, embroidery, big band music, watching old movies, game shows and she has a big heart for animals.
