A new sign was put up yesterday for the A. N. Despins Co. Recently Mr. Despins renewed and repaired his interior furnishings and his store now presents a first-class appearance both inside and out. Today, July 15, is St. Swithin’s day and it is hardly expected to be an auspicious one. If the scheduled rains come, then according to tradition there will be rain for the next 40 days.
Says the ancient poem: “St. Swithin’s Day, if thou dost rain, for 40 days it will remain.”
Since the forecast for the next couple of days at least calls for showers, it certainly is something to think about. Anybody know of a good anti-rain dance?

Auburn city and school officials Monday reviewed plans for a new $280,000 track and field facility at Edward Little High School.
Officials were notified two weeks ago that Auburn had received a $140,000 federal grant for the 400-meter track with a rubberized surface. The facility will be built parallel to Western Avenue in the present ELHS athletic practice filed and part of the lower parking lot.
Another $100,000 will come from a five-year capital improvements bond recently approved by City Council. City Street Department crews will perform the reamining $40,000 worth of work.
