“Poll-flooding?” Give me a break.

In the Sun Journal July 9, Maine Republican Party Chairman Charlie Webster was quoted as supporting the repeal of same-day voter registration because — despite being 38 years old and instigated by Republicans — it is said to cause “poll-flooding.”

In my innocence, I would have thought that large numbers of people exercising their right to vote was a good thing. I suppose one disadvantage of poll-flooding might be confusion at a city or town clerk’s office as the multitudes show up on Election Day because they moved and they can only get one day off to visit city hall, or they can’t get a ride any other day. However, the city clerks have not complained about chaos, and do not support repeal of same-day registration.

It ain’t broke. Don’t fix it.

Webster is also engaged in unearthing examples of voter fraud. So far, I think he’s up to a grand total of three cases over the past 40 years. Republicans on the floor of the Legislature said that voter fraud was not a problem in Maine.

It still ain’t broke.

Repealing same-day registration is a terrible idea. Voting should be easily accessible to all.
