POLAND SPRING – The Poland Spring Preservation Society will welcome singer and musician Larry Gowell at 7 p.m., on Monday, July 25 as a part of its annual summer concert series.
Gowell of Auburn has a strong base voice and has been a part of several recordings — his first playing trumpet at age 12. He later pitched for the New York Yankees and in 1972 was the last American League pitcher to hit a ball before the designated hitter rule went into effect. The ball is now at Cooperstown.
Larry has a nursing home ministry and has been singing inspirational music to seniors throughout the state at small churches and elsewhere. He recently produced his first album which has been getting great reviews.
Some of the songs Larry sings and plays include, “You Raise Me Up,” “The Prayer,” “The Lost Chord,” “How Great thou Art,” “You Never Walk Alone,” and “The Lord’s Prayer.”
All proceeds benefit the preservation and restoration of the Maine State Building and All Souls Chapel, both of which are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Proceeds also helps to fund the nonprofit’s educational programs. Tickets are $7.50 at the door and include refreshments. Members of the society may be seated at 6:25 p.m. with the general public following at 6:30. For more information please contact the society at 998-4142 or visit us at www.polandspringps.org
