100 years ago, 1911
A fire which started in the barn owned by Carroll Perkins of Perkins Ridge yesterday afternoon about 2:30 completely demolished the barn with 20 tons of new hay and threatened to destroy several farm buildings nearby. The cause of the fire is unknown and Mr. Perkins is at a loss to explain how the fire could have possibly started.
50 years ago, 1961
Parking meters on sections of Pine and Oak streets in Lewiston were replaced yesterday by the police department.
Cost of parking there went up with the switch.
Police Capt. Joseph H. Farrand and LPD maintenance man Lucien Lavoie installed nickel and dime meters on those sections of Pine and Oak streets, replacing the penny and nickel units that had been there.
The meters still provide an hour’s parking, only the price has gone up.
25 years ago, 1986
A major downtown Auburn redevelopment project that will hitch two 100-year-old buildings together with an elevator was announced Friday in what Mayor John J. Cleveland referred to as another step in the city’s “renaissance of development.”
Portland developer Lawrence Pride said he hopes to have the $1.4-million project, to be known as One Auburn Center, underway in September and completed by the end of the year. The private enterprise project involves the Goff Block on Court Street and the former mechanics Savings Bank Building on Main Street.
