FARMINGTON — Police say a local man was arrested Monday after walking into a Perham Street apartment and asking for gas money.

John Carleton, 50, is facing charges of criminal trespass and violation of bail conditions after the early morning incident.

The middle-aged apartment tenant heard her front door open at about 5:45 a.m. Monday morning. Carleton apparently walked into her living room area, a space close enough to the bedroom so that he could see her rise from her bed, the police report said.

He told the woman he needed money for gas and asked for $5. She told him to wait outside while she got the money. She gave him $10 and called police.

The woman did not know Carleton, who entered through an unlocked door.

Carleton is already on bail conditions stemming from a theft at a downtown store.

He was taken to Franklin County Detention Center by Farmington officer Darin Gilbert.

He was then transferred to another undisclosed facility Monday but is expected to return to Farmington, Doug Blauvelt, jail administrator, said.
