WINTHROP — The Downeast Dodgers stopped the surging Winthrop Red Sox with a 5-2 road victory in Pine Tree League senior baseball.

Brian Carver pitched a complete game two-hitter.

Early defensive woes by Winthrop (7-6) gave Downeast (5-6) three unearned runs over the first two innings, putting the Sox in a hole they couldn’t escape.

The Dodgers pushed across another run across in the fifth inning with a Hank Ogilby double, followed by Drew Hastings’ two-out RBI single.

Winthrop scored one run in the third and another in the sixth to cut the lead in half, but Carver retired the last nine batters, four by way of strikeout, to complete his pitching gem.

Ageless Jim Morris, who pitched well enough to win, took the loss for Winthrop. Veteran Rusty Klobas led the Dodgers’ assault with three hits. Max Arsenault added a double.

Dave Ricker Jr. and Brett Witherell had Winthrop’s only hits on the day.

Earlier in the week, Winthrop knocked off the Pittsfield Padres, 14-1, in five innings by virtue of the mercy rule.

The Sox scored eight runs on seven hits in the fourth inning, led by Corey Gillespie’s single and triple with two RBI’s in the frame.

Witherell ended up with three hits to drive in five runs, while Matt McCarthy was perfect on the day, going 2-for-2 and scoring four runs. Eric Palleschi picked up the win from the hill.

Jason O’Brien and Matt Huff were repeat hitters for the Padres.
