LIVERMORE FALLS — The town’s code enforcement officer told selectmen Monday that the updated draft floodplain maps are available for review.
CEO James Butler Jr. said there are hard copies in his office that he recommends people to review if they own property currently in a flood zone, or have property near a floodplain to make sure the information is correct.
The new maps will also be digital once the process is completed.
If the town doesn’t participate in the process, then it will make it difficult for property owners to get flood insurance, sell or buy property, Butler said.
Digital maps are developed by using an aerial map as a base and adding topography maps and flood data, he said.
The maps have changed a little because the data gathered is more accurate, he said.
He has looked at most of the maps and continues to do so as time permits.
The new maps don’t have any new properties in the flood zone, he said. Other towns in the state do have more properties included in the floodplain than they previous had, he said.
The process is now in the community review period.
“The maps are complete but are not official yet,” Butler said. It is expected the maps will be implemented in July 2012.
The town will have to amend its ordinances to adopt the new floodplain maps.
“You can’t buy flood insurance unless you are in a floodplain,” select board Chairman Bill Demaray said.
Butler’s office hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays, if anyone is interested in reviewing the maps, he said. He can also be contacted at 897-3321.
