I cannot believe the Sun Journal printed the column by Jason Levesque (July 17). It was nothing more than an outright fictitious Republican rant. I read the column three times looking to find one scintilla of evidence but, alas, I could find none.
I moved to Maine, in part, because of the sign people see when they cross the Maine state line: “Maine — the way life should be.” That sentiment is such an uplifting ideal.
For Levesque to infer criminal activity with nothing more than claiming that just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening is an anathema to this free and democratic society.
To accuse, without foundation, that college students are voting twice … Whatever happened to “innocent until proven guilty?” And for the Sun Journal to give voice to those spurious claims is downright shameful.
With Republicans across the country enacting Draconian laws stripping people of their basic rights and pushing agendas that only benefit their wealthy campaign contributors, I truly fear for the future of this country.
I am hoping beyond hope that now that they are rabidly attacking the public sector, including police officers, firefighters, nurses and teachers, causing enormous demonstrations, grassroots petitions, and a huge backlash among the disenfranchised with their blatant push for legislation that continues to widen the gap between the rich and the poor, that the tidal wave of Americans saying enough is enough lasts through the 2012 election and thoroughly routs the Republicans at the polls.
That, of course, assumes people will still have the right to vote by then.
