NORWAY — The Oxford County Committee to Protect Voter Rights is collecting signatures to for a people’s veto of LD 1376, a recently enacted law that will make Election Day registration illegal.

Friday has been declared a statewide Day of Democracy. Coffee shops in Norway, Rumford and Bethel will host events on Friday and on Monday and Tuesday of next week to collect signatures,

Cathy Newell, chairwoman of the Oxford County Democrats, said in a release that people interested in participating can drop by Cafe diCocoa in Bethel on Friday, Cafe Nomad in Norway on Monday or Sam’s in Rumford on Tuesday to pick up packets including the petition and a neighborhood to canvas for signatures.

Organizers are trying to collect 58,000 signatures statewide to set a people’s veto in motion.

Cafe diCocoa on Main Street in Bethel will host Day of Democracy events from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday. The event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at Cafe Nomad on Main Street in Norway. On Tuesday, Sam’s in Route 2 in Rumford will host Day of Democracy events from 1 to 4 p.m.
