JAY — A limousine traveling south on Route 4 Saturday night struck a young male bear as it ran into the roadway just south of Howie’s Welding in North Jay.
The driver, Roland Gagne, 69, Portland, was not injured when the 2001 Lincoln hit the bear about 10:15 p.m., according to the police report. Gagne was driving for Portland Limousine.
The bear apparently was not found that night but was injured. Police received a call Sunday morning after someone spotted it in a ditch near the scene, Jay police secretary Donna Ladd said. The animal was put down.
The limousine did receive some damage, estimated at more than $1,000, in the incident.
