Chicken barbecue
OQUOSSOC — St. Luke’s Parish in Rangeley will host a chicken barbecue from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31, rain or shine, at the Rangeley Sportsmen and Guides Club on Skiway Road.
The menu includes chicken, red dogs, coleslaw, homemade baked beans, various salads and desserts, coffee, ice tea and lemonade. Adults $12 and children under 7 $6. The public is always welcome.
Storytelling fest
FARMINGTON — The Western Maine Storytelling Festival will begin with stories by Gaylon “Jeep” Wilcox, Michael Parent and Jackson Gillman, and music by The Achords, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at the University of Maine at Farmington amphitheater near High and South streets.
A free storytelling showcase will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 6, at Farmington Public Library, 117 Academy St. Stories for Families, also free, will take place from 1:45 to 4:45 p.m. at the Meetinghouse Park gazebo, Main Street, across from Franklin County Courthouse. A storytelling concert will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lincoln Auditorium, University of Maine at Farmington, behind 111 South St. The Tale End reception for tellers and listeners will be from 9:30 to 11 p.m. at The Homestead Bakery, 186 Broadway.

Book sale
WILTON — Thousands of books for readers of all ages will be available at the Wilton Library’s Book Sale during the Blueberry Festival Aug. 5 and 6, at Western Maine Expo, 128 Weld Road. This is a big, well-arranged sale and the price is right: buyers donate what they can contribute to help the library. Hours are Friday, Aug. 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 6, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Public supper

Lawn sale
RANGELEY — The Episcopal Church Women of Good Shepherd, Maine Street, will hold their annual lawn sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. The charge for a space is $10. For more information or to make a reservation, call the church office at 864-3381.
Dead River alumni
STRATTON — The Alumni Association of the Dead River Area will hold its 31st Annual Meeting on Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Stratton Community Building on Main Street. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. The business meeting will start at 11 a.m. followed by the awards for graduate anniversaries and teachers.
The Stratton/Eustis Parents & Teachers Club will have food for sale and the alumni dessert table will offer homemade cookies, cakes and such. Proceeds from this table go to the scholarship fund.
Anyone attending schools in Stratton, Flagstaff High School and Mt. Abram Regional High School, Dead River and Coplin Plantations are encouraged to attend. Family and friends are welcome.
The Dead River Area Historical Society will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature “The History of Local Game Wardens.”
Bean-hole beans
STRONG — The Porter Lake Association will hold its 42nd annual Bean-Hole Bean Supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at Strong Beach on Porter Lake. In case of rain, it will be held at the Forster Building.
Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children 5 to 11 and free under 5. Please bring a salad or dessert to share. The menu includes bean-hole baked beans, franks, rolls and beverages, and a wide variety of donated salads and desserts. The dinner supports activities beneficial to the lake, its users and the lake environment.
Strong Beach can be reached from Route 234 (connecting New Vineyard and Strong) turning onto Pond Road and then right again onto Beanies Beach Road.
Alumni reunion
JAY — The Wilton Academy Alumni reunion was held at LaFleur’s Restaurant on July 12, with an excellent attendance of 88 WA attendees and 15 guests.
Ron Melendy, class of ’54, social worker, and Maurice Whitten, science teacher at WA from 1945-48, spoke briefly.
The classes with the most representatives were the classes of 1950 and 1951 with 11 each. The oldest attendee was Florence Wells Pike, class of 1933, and the next was Calvin Sewall, class of 1937. Other classes represented were: ’41, ’43, ’44, ’45, ’46, ’47, ’48, ’49, ’52, ’53, ’54, ’55, ’56, ’57, ’59, ’60, ’61, ’65 and ’66.
Out of state attendees were Larry Merrill from Arizona, Roy and Shirley Hammond Pike from Oklahoma, Don and Dorothea Packard Minnich from Connecticut, Barbara Maxwell Taylor from Massachusetts and Avis Roy from New Hampshire.
The next reunion will at the same place on July 10, 2012.
