GREENWOOD — Mt. Abram Family Resort won’t have its lodge rebuilt for the ski season, according to the resort’s general manager.
Kevin Rosenberg said Wednesday the ski area is looking into temporary structures to replace the Main Base Lodge, which was struck by lightning on July 6 and sustained major damage throughout the building.
The ski area had originally planned to repair or rebuild the lodge in time for the ski season, but now, Rosenberg said, Mt. Abram will “almost certainly” be operating out of a temporary lodge.
The ski area plans to open as usual and is considering “anything from modular to tent-style structures,” Rosenberg said. He said other ski areas have used temporary structures and called them “versatile, warm and comfortable.”
He said he and the ski area’s employees are working in the smaller Westside Lodge and that the mountain is operating as usual. Mt. Abram is selling season passes and gearing up for fall events, Rosenberg said. “We’re diligently working at getting our staff ready and getting our equipment ready on the hill,” he said.
Lightning struck the roof on the lodge’s third floor, destroying the office there and surging through the building. Rosenberg said he left less than an hour before the strike.
While fire was mostly in the west wing, smoke and water affected the entire building and lightning destroyed electrical systems throughout, even running through the lines to the rental shop and maintenance building.
According to Rosenberg, the office contained the databases and photo archives, and decades of photos have been lost. The ski area is asking skiers with photos from the mountain to share them. Photos may be emailed to [email protected].
