FARMINGTON — The town’s involvement in the Hows Corner waste oil site lawsuit has come to an end, Town Manager Richard Davis told selectmen this week.
A loan of $8,845.17, with some earned interest, from the Finance Authority of Maine has been forgiven, he said. The loan was to help parties sued by the federal Environmental Protection Agency for the cost of cleaning up the Superfund site in Plymouth in Penobscot County.
Under new legislation, the loans are forgiven, so that amount will help compensate the town for its costs, he said.
The town’s involvement arose from the legal disposal of 120 gallons of mostly used motor oil shipped to the site in Plymouth in Penobscot County in the late 1960s. The site was run by Portland-Bangor Waste Oil Co., which eventually ceased operations.
