NEWRY— Residents of the River Valley have many hiking trails close to home, but two fairly easy ones are Puzzle Mountain in Newry and Bald Mountain in Weld.
Puzzle Mountain, an easy to moderate 3.2 miles, provides ledge views of the 4,000-foot peaks of Grafton Notch. The trail up Puzzle begins relatively gradual until crossing a stream, at which point the trail becomes moderately steep until reaching the summit’s cairn.
To get to Puzzle Mountain, travel north from Route 2 in Newry on Route 26 toward Grafton Notch for five miles, then look for the Puzzle Mountain trail head on the right.
Bald Mountain, at 2,836 feet in elevation, is in Weld and offers a spectacular 360-degree view from the summit. The 1.5-mile hike takes approximately one hour. There is a view of Lake Webb below, and the tall granite- and conifer-covered Mt. Blue range.
To reach Bald Mountain, drive north on Route 156 from Route 2 in Wilton about eight miles. The trail head is by a dirt turnout on the left side of the road.
