Yesterday, the Lewiston Public Works Department commenced construction of the base for the huge “birthday cake” being donated by the Central Maine Power Co. for the Lewiston Centennial celebration.
The “cake” is 10-by-32 feet, in three layers, with 100 electrically lighted candles. It was designed by Stanley G. McCurdy, supervisor of the display department for the power utility. In describing the “cake,” McCurdy said: “I hate to disappoint the boys and girls of Lewiston, but the cake just isn’t the kind they can eat. It is made of building and display materials.”
