RUMFORD — The Rumford Fire Department and the NewPage Fire Brigade have maintained their emergency response partnership.

The two operations have joined resources and assets to respond more effectively and efficiently to emergency situations, save operating costs and form a Hazardous Material Emergency Response team, according to Bob Chase, chief of the Rumford Fire Department.

“We started this HAZMAT team, Regional Response Team No. 10, with NewPage three years ago,” Chase said. “The HAZMAT team has 30 members, 20 from NewPage and 10 from the Rumford Fire Department.”

“Our HAZMAT team may be called, if needed, to a hazardous material emergency anywhere in the state,” Chase said. “There are just 12 HAZMAT teams in the entire state.”

“This is a great arrangement, for both of us, to capitalize on each other’s resources for training and emergencies,” he said. “It truly is a win-win dynamic.”

The next team training session is scheduled for Aug. 29, Chase said.

“The Rumford Fire Department has need for more volunteer call force members,” Chase said.
