LEWISTON — Muriel Rogers Maloney, widow of John J. Maloney Jr., and mother of Julie Maloney Crowley (Nathaniel) and Laurie Maloney, passed away on Aug. 2, at the d’Youville Pavilion, at the age of 96. She had been in a period of failing health.
She was born Nov. 12,1914, in Baltimore, Md., to William Milton Rogers and Julia Minder Rogers. Muriel was the youngest of three children. Both parents died at young ages and Muriel was sent to live with her aunt Edna Rogers in Brooklyn, N.Y. She went to boarding school, graduating from Notre Dame Academy on Staten Island, N.Y., in 1931. She then attended Mt. Ida Junior College in Newton, Mass. It was while at Mt. Ida that she met the handsome young man from Portland, Jack Maloney, a Tufts College senior, who would later become her husband.
After working for several years as a secretary for a brokerage firm on Wall Street, Muriel married Jack on Aug. 1, 1939, in a ceremony at All Soul’s Chapel in Poland Spring. They settled in Lewiston, where she was a full-time homemaker and mother to their daughters. They were married for 56 years until Jack’s death in 1995.
Muriel was active in the Patronesses of St. Mary’s Hospital and looked forward to meetings with her longtime bridge club companions. She was a devoted member of St. Patrick’s Church in Lewiston. She was known for her quick wit, her stylish hats, her mastery of the NY Times crossword puzzles, and her love for reading.
Besides her daughters and son-in-law, she is survived by her grandchildren, Sheri Crowley (Mrs. Peter Rooks) of Vancouver, Wash., and Erin Crowley (Mrs. David Hunt) of Denver, Colo., Michael Parkin Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Burlington, Mass., John Parkin of Auburn and Brian Parkin and his wife, Lissette, of Naples; great-grandchildren, Quinn Rooks, Hannah and Alexander Hunt, Ayanna, Sole, Samuel, Joshua and Ava Parkin; sister-in-law, Maureen Maloney Potter of New Jersey; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Juliette Kreitler; and her brother, James Rogers.
The Maloney family extends their sincere gratitude to the entire staff on 4E at d’Youville Pavilion for their steadfast and compassionate care for their mother. Special thanks also to the staff at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for their support and advocacy. Each contributed to making her care the finest there was.
