PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine Gov. Paul LePage wants to find an additional $100 million in savings, in part because of the deficit-reduction plan approved by Congress.
A bipartisan task force analyzing state departments and agencies with the aim of prioritizing services, consolidating functions and eliminating duplication and inefficiencies is charged by law with finding $25 million in savings.
But a LePage spokeswoman said Friday that he’d like to see more ambitious savings.
Spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett says one of the new areas of concern is a $30 million cut in the federal heating assistance program for Maine. She says it’s a priority to ensure the state’s most vulnerable are warm this winter.
