FREEPORT — Shirley B. Greeley, 88, died at the Freeport Nursing Home, with her family by her side.

She was born in Durham, May 1, 1923, a daughter of the late Albert and Elizabeth (Merrill) Bowie. Shirley attended local schools, graduating from Edward Little High School.

She worked as a personnel assistant at Maine Electronics for more than 20 years, before retiring. She was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a past member and president of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 1603 of Auburn. She was also a justice of the peace who performed her daughter’s wedding ceremony.

She loved to read and do a little traveling. Her fondest memory was a Hawaiian cruise she took with her daughters in 2005. Shirley was a very private person who truly enjoyed her time to herself, but she loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild. In her later years, she developed a great sense of humor, which brought joy to her caretakers at the hospital and nursing home.

Shirley is survived by her two daughters, Carol Grupe of Melbourne, Fla., and Jean Seely of Pownal; five grandchildren, Lori Milton of East Patchogue N.Y., Lisa Fain of Cary, N.C., Ryan Seely of West Rockport, Joshua Seely of Pownal and Amanda Seely of Pownal; nine great-grandchildren, Christi and Steven Larsen of East Patchogue N.Y., Jessica, David, Matthew and Jon Fain of Cary N.C., Patrick Seely of West Rockport, Taryn and Logan Curry of Pownal; one great-great-grandson, Jake of East Patchogue, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by two brothers, James and Ermund (Spud) Bowie; and two sisters, Bess Footman and Lulu Sylvester.
