100 years ago, 1911
It is said that every cottage on Lake Auburn is occupied now and that many of them are let for the month of September. This year is said to be a banner year for letting cottages at the lake. A number of new cottages have been built this year and now there are nearly 150 cottages at the lake.
50 years ago, 1961
Sheila Cooper of Lewiston took first place in all divisions of the contest conducted at Winslow High School Sunday by the Maine Chapter of the National Drum Majorettes Association.
Sheila, aged 13, was named grand champion and was also given the title of Miss Kennebec Valley. She participated in the single, two-baton and strutting divisions. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank S. Cooper of 405 Sabattus St., Sheila will enter the eighth grade at St. Patrick’s Parochial School in the fall.

Complaints of profanity, vandalism, illegal parking and motorcycle noise caused by patrons of The Cage, a bar at 97 Ash St., led the Lewiston City Council to deny unanimously Tuesday an application by owner John Pierce for a special amusement permit for dancing and entertainment. Councilor Paul A. Couture argued at length against approving the permit, despite testimony by Lewiston Police Lt. Gerard Baril that, while noisy, The Cage “has noises that are associated with doing business, as far as a restaurant, bar or tavern goes.” And in a memo to councilors, Police Chief Gregory C. Hanscom said that he had “no basis to recommend denial.”
