JAY — A local woman whose home on BJ’s Lane was heavily damaged by fire Thursday afternoon is accused of setting fire to the same home Friday morning.

State fire investigator Edward Hastings IV on Friday arrested homeowner Amanda Morey, 27, on a charge of arson, said Sgt. Joel Davis of the State Fire Marshal’s Office. There may be more charges, he said.

Morey was being held on $5,000 cash bail Friday afternoon at the Franklin County Jail in Farmington, Davis said.

Firefighters from Jay, Livermore Falls, Wilton and Farmington responded at 9:08 a.m. Friday to a report of another fire at the mobile home. Jay police officer Nicholas Gulliver was first on the scene and reported a small fire in a mattress and another on the floor of a bedroom, Jay Assistant Fire Chief Mike Booker said.

When firefighters arrived, the bedroom was ablaze and flames were spreading through the living room and out the front door, he said.

State investigators conducted interviews after about 20 firefighters put out the fire.

On Thursday at about 2 p.m., two dozen firefighters from six departments responded to a fire in the living room of the home and quickly put it out. The home was heavily damaged. When firefighters left, no smoke or fire was detected, Jay fire Lt. Gary Wright said at the scene Friday.

State fire investigator Rick Shepard ruled Thursday night that the cause of that day’s fire would be classified as undetermined.

On Thursday, Morey sat sobbing on the edge of Route 140 as she watched firefighters put out the fire. She said she had returned home from the store and smelled something burning but could find no fire or smoke. She then spotted smoke under the couch and put water on it, she told the Sun Journal.

Thinking she had extinguished the fire, Morey said, she took a nap and awoke to find the place on fire. She escaped uninjured with her dog while her husband, Adam, was at work in Turner, she said.

The family had no insurance on the home.
