AUGUSTA — Raymond M. Chadwick, 73, of Farmington, died Thursday afternoon, Aug. 4, at the Maine General Hospital in Augusta, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on June 12, 1938, in Lawrence, Mass., the son of Francis H. and Ida (Sanford) Chadwick. He graduated from North Andover High School and went on to attend Lowell Technical Institute, earning an associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and then a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Industrial Engineering from Northeastern in 1967.

On March 10, 1957, he married Carolyn Smith in North Andover, Mass. They made their home in North Andover, where he worked at Raytheon Corp. in Lowell for 18 years in the Missile Systems Division. He retired at the age of 47, moving to Maine after he designed and built his dream home in Farmington. During his retirement he ran the Sandy River Emporium Antique Shop in Farmington from 1985-’95, and later worked as a Mechanical Engineer at Sonoco in North Anson. He was a continuing member of the Cochichewick Masonic Lodge in North Andover.

Mr. Chadwick, always thinking of others, loved to design and build things as gifts for his family and friends. He had a fantastic sense of humor and enjoyed joking with everyone. He also enjoyed camping at Dummers Beach in Weld, golfing, fishing, and watching the Red Sox. His greatest pleasure however came in the time he was able to spend with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Chadwick of Farmington; children, Robert Chadwick and his wife, Sharon, of Hampton Falls, N.H., Linda Storer and her husband, Roderick, of Wilton, David Chadwick of Farmington, and William Chadwick and his wife, Rebecca, of Wyomissing, Pa.; grandchildren, Randy, Joshua, Allan, Andrew, Kristopher, Jonathan, Parker, Sarah, Ryan, and Samantha; a brother, George Allan Chadwick of Port Orange, Fla.;  and many nieces and nephews.
