RUMFORD — Earl L. Marr Jr., 90, of Rumford, died Monday, Aug. 8, at the Rumford Community Home with his loving family by his side.

He was born in North Bridgton, Oct. 29, 1920, the son of Earl and Alice (Kneeland) Marr Sr. He graduated from Norway High School, Class of 1940, and had attended the University of Maine at Orono.

During World War II, he served from 1942 to 1946 as a private first class in the U.S. Army overseas in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe and was in the Battle of the Bulge under Gen. George Patton, and received the Bronze Star Medal.

Earl worked at the Waterford Sawmill for several years and then worked at the Rumford Paper Mill in the unloading department until retirement in October 1982 from Boise Cascade Paper Co. after more than 31 years.

He was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior, St. Athanasius–St. John Church; a former member of Robert Shand Post 1641, VFW; he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, tinkering around the house, enjoying time with his friends, and loved spending time with his family.

He was married in North Conway, N.H., on Aug. 12, 1950, to the former Jeannette L. Corriveau, who died May 13, 2007.

Survivors include sons, Dennis Marr of Peru and his girlfriend, Bette and Danny Marr and wife, Ginny, of Madison, Ala.; daughters, Erla Marr Gamage and husband, Dean, of New Sharon, June Elaine Giambattista and husband, John, of Rumford, Janice and John Durland, of Mexico and Joan Hamann and husband, Roger, of Peru; sister, Mary Andrews of South Paris; grandchildren, Kristen Crickenberger, Jillian Marr, Daniel Gamage, Jennifer and Ryan Giambattista, Jody Raio, Christian and Alexandria Durland, Eric, Michelle, Austin Hamann and Courtney Mease; and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; wife; daughter, Jacqueline Mease; brother, Roger; and sister, Ann Forrest.
