FARMINGTON — Pleasant Street behind Meetinghouse Park will be widened and sidewalks installed starting Monday.
Vehicles will be prohibited from parking behind the park after 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14.
Starting Monday, the Farmington Public Works Department will begin the project. The estimated date of completion is Sept. 15.
Anyone who parks in the spaces will be towed at the owner’s expense.
In addition, motorists may need to seek alternate routes at various times during the construction. Pleasant Street will close at times from the west end of Park Street to the west end of Exchange Street.
The road work consists of adding a storm drainage basin and drainage pipe, curbing and repairing and rebuilding the street, Denis Castonguay, director of Public Works, said Tuesday. The project also includes installing sidewalks on both sides of the street.
The street will be widened by about 10 feet, creating better parking, he said. The street center line will be moved and the curbing will move closer to the park. Across the street, Central Maine Power Co. has moved utility poles providing 3 feet on that side for a sidewalk.
During the April town meeting, voters accepted a Community Development Block Grant to make improvements to the park but that money has not been released from the federal government yet, Castonguay said.
This work is the beginning of the $40,000 CDBG project to improve accessibility at the park, Town Manager Richard Davis said. It is being done with town funds.
Part of the improvements include handicap accessibility on both the front and back of the park. The crew will have to come back and do the ADA portion later, Castonguay said. Nothing will be done to the front of the park this year.
The town crew finished their road construction work on the Red Schoolhouse Road last week. It’s a big improvement and they are proud of the results, he said.
