Trail fundraiser
LEWISTON — David B. Field, a retired University of Maine professor of forest resources, has written a book about Maine’s Appalachian Trail, and has offered copies of the book to the Maine Appalachian Trail Club to be sold as a fundraiser. All proceeds from book sales through MATC will be used for trail work.
“Images of America: Along Maine’s Appalachian Trail” illustrates the rich history of the trail’s rugged mountains and vast forests. Black-and-white images in the book come primarily from the MATC archives, the Maine State Library and the author’s personal files.
To purchase the book through MATC, go to www.matc.org or write to MATC, PO Box 55, Gray ME 04039. The cost, including tax and shipping, is $28 for a single copy; MATC members get 15 percent discount. Multiple copies to the same address are somewhat less because shipping cost is less per book.
Church music
DIXFIELD — The Dixfield Congregational Church will welcome father/daughter team Andy and Elle Buckland at their service on Sunday, Aug. 14. Church service begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 11.
Elle, a recent Mt. Blue graduate, grew up in a musical family. She will be attending Berklee College of Music in Boston in September. A longtime member of the Mt. Blue Voices and Franklin County Fiddlers, she and her dad perform at various functions with their traditional and contemporary American indie-folk-pop and fiddle tunes.
Voice class
FARMINGTON — As part of the 100th anniversary celebration of Lillian Nordica’s final visit to her hometown of Farmington, the Nordica Memorial Association, with support from The University Maine at Farmington’s department of Sound, Performance, and Visual Inquiry, will present a Master Class in voice.
On Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. in Nordica Auditorium, Dr. Joseph Wiggett, the featured singer for the annual Nordica Day Concert on Aug. 17, will coach six local singers. Those singers are Peter Campion, Alex Chandler, Kerri Cooper, Jackie Ranco, Sam Systma and Matt West.
Each singer will perform a song or aria of his/her choice and then Wiggett will give, in effect, a short lesson to that singer in regard to interpretation or vocal technique. These “lessons” are observed by anyone who wishes to attend. It will be an opportunity to hear some outstanding local singers and then watch a professional singer coach them.
Accompanying the singers will be Patricia Hayden and Sam Systma. There is no charge for the class, but donations will be accepted. For more information call Jane Parker at 778-9437.
