NORWAY — The Alan Day Community Garden will hold an open and free potluck dinner at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at the garden, 26 Whitman St.

It has been a busy summer at the garden and the gathering will celebrate it. Seventeen individuals and families have rented garden plots and have grown flowers, vegetables and herbs.

The organization has expanded its capacity and sponsored workshops in permaculture, composting, yoga for gardeners and scything. Groups have donated materials and labor to for bench and a footbridge. And three young gardeners recently attended a four-day youth leadership training, “Rooted in Community,” in Philadelphia, Pa.

The goal of the garden is to grow food, educate and demonstrate different methods for gardeners. The project strives to use organic, sustainable methods to support an enduring local food system. The garden is named for and honors Alan Day, a local activist, gardener, philanthropist and father, who died in 2008 of pancreatic cancer at age 54.

Donations can be made by check to Alan Day Community Garden and sent c/o Ken Morse, Healthy Oxford Hills, 181 Main St., Norway, ME 04268. This year, the garden has a $5,000 matching gift, so all donations are doubled. It will also accept gardening item donations.

The potluck will include a campfire, story-telling and music. Residents are invited to bring their instruments and a dish to share, table settings and a recipe or two.
