AUBURN — The Auburn-Lewiston Sports Hall of Fame has named Robert Stone as its new chairman. Stone will be succeeding Brad Sloat, who served three years as the organization’s leader.
Stone is a well-known local banker, former newspaper columnist and sports enthusiast. He has served as the HOF’s historian and archivist for the past two years.
“I am pleased and honored to accept the chairmanship of the A-L Sports Hall of Fame, “ said Stone. “We have a dedicated group of volunteers who are very knowledgeable about the sports history of the Twin Cities. Our mission is to honor the achievements of local athletes and teams, and we have been doing this for twenty eight years.”
At its most recent banquet in May, the Hall inducted its Class of 2011: Ray Beaudoin, Tim Jordan, Barry Peaco and Don White.
The A-L Sports Hall of Fame, an activity of the Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce, was established in 1983. Since then, 123 individual athletes and coaches have been inducted and memorialized as part of the rich sports history of this community. The local HOF is believed to be the only one in New England that represents the general population rather than that of a particular school or sport.
