This is in response to the story “Loonie unloved in Maine stores,” that was picked up from the Morning Sentinel and printed in the Sun Journal Aug. 9.
I wonder why Jim Benoit of Halifax, Nova Scotia, thought that his Canadian dollars would be accepted in Maine? I have traveled to more than 20 countries around the world (including Canada) and none of them accepted U.S. dollars. I have always had to exchange my U.S. dollars for the currency of the host country.
I’ve been stuck with only U.S. currency while traveling abroad and know Benoit’s conundrum. The solution: Exchange money before leaving home or upon arrival in the host country.
Benoit shouldn’t blame the merchants of Central Maine when he couldn’t buy his children an ice cream cone using Canadian money.
He should remember that, when in Rome . . .
