MANCHESTER — MSGA Match Play Championship: Sunny skies returned for the afternoon finals, and the spectators were again treated to some great golf. Matt Greenleaf took the early lead, but a bogey on 4 squared the match. Ryan Gay birdied the sixth hole to take a 1-up lead, which he maintained for five holes, until a birdie on 11 gave him a 2-up lead. The 12th hole proved to be trouble throughout the championship for Gay, and the final match was no exception. Gay’s 3-wood from the tee sailed to the left of the green, hit the cart path and found out of bounds. Gay teed up another ball and this time his shot found a cart up by the green, bouncing around until it settled on the floor of the cart. Gay, following proper rules procedure, lifted his ball and then dropped it on the cart path after the cart was moved. He was then given relief from the cart path, chipped on and made the putt for bogey, to match Greenleaf’s bogey and remain 2-up. With the skies once again threatening, the match continued until Greenleaf made bogey on 16 to hand Gay a 3 & 2 win. The win completes Gay’s championship schedule for the summer as he returns to school on Tuesday.

Gay defeated Ricky Jones in the semifinals, while Greenleaf got the better of Brian Bilodeau. In the first match, Gay’s opening tee shot headed for the trees right but he was able to get a shot to the green and got a favorable bounce to give himself a chance. He drained the birdie putt to win the hole and set the tone for the day. The birdie gave him a 1-up lead, onehe never relinquished, as he was able to close out the always steady Jones on the 15th hole and win the match 4 & 3. In the second semi, Greenleaf maintained a lead through much of the match, though never by more than 2-up. A string of three-putts by Greenleaf towards the end of the match allowed Bilodeau to square the match on 15, and another bogey by Greenleaf on 17 gave Bilodeau his first lead of the day. On 18, Greenleaf again showed his skill with the flat stick by sinking a 15-foot birdie putt to send the match into extra holes. On the first extra hole, Bilodeau was not able to get up and down after spinning his approach shot off the front of the green, and Greenleaf’s par was enough to send him to the finals against Gay.
