AUBURN — The Tinpanic Steel Band will bring the rhythms of a Caribbean street dance to Festival Plaza on Thursday, Aug. 18, at the last concert in L/A Arts’ “Sounds of Summer” series.
The 14-piece steel drum band, known for its high-energy calypso rhythms and big band sound, will play at noon. The concert is free.
Tinpanic was formed in 2002 by a group of people from the Lewiston-Auburn area who share a love for the lively steel band sound. Thirteen members strong with two apprentices, the band has welcomed a new director, Sarah Dow, music director for Auburn’s elementary and middle schools.
The ensemble’s repertoire of island party music and swing and pop favorites was recently expanded to include the timely theme of the World Cup Soccer Soca Warriors from Trinidad and Tobago, plus several calypsos and soca tunes debuted in May at the New England Steel Pan Festival at Sugarloaf.
Caribbean dress is optional. Parking is available in the Chestnut Street garage. If it rains, the concert will be at the Franco-American Heritage Center, 46 Cedar St., Lewiston. For more information, call 782-7228 or visit www.laarts.org.
