PARIS — Cleveland R. Lovejoy, 86, husband of Cathryn Cummings Lovejoy of Bethel, died Friday Aug. 12, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, surrounded by his family.

He was born Dec. 5, 1924, in Norway, the son of Fredrick and Eleanor Kneeland Lovejoy and was educated in Mason and Bethel schools. He married Cathryn Cummings on June 15, 1947.

He served his country in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. He worked as a lumberjack most of his life and at the Wheeler’s Mica Mine for a time.

He was an avid football and baseball fan, playing on the West Bethel baseball town team for over 15 years. He was a musician, playing the accordion with the Legionnaires and several other dance bands for many years. Since 1995, he volunteered at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris, playing the organ. He helped raise the funds to purchase a new organ that is currently at the veterans’ home for their use.

He was a founding father of the Pleasant Valley Church in West Bethel, serving as deacon and organist. He was a member of the Bethel Church of the Nazarene and a church trustee and organist and was a life member and past commander of the Jackson-Silver Post No. 68 of Locke Mills.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Cathryn Cummings Lovejoy of Bethel; one son, Alanson Lovejoy and his wife, Tyrene, of West Bethel; two daughters, Dorothy West and her husband, Ray, of Rumford, and Ellen Whitney and her husband, Rick, of Bethel; six grandchildren, Rebecca West of Rumford, Christopher West of Oviedo, Fla., Shane Lovejoy of Gorham, Angela Lovejoy of West Bethel, Andrew Whitney and Daniel Whitney, both of Bethel; and four great-grandchildren.
