AUGUSTA — State Police said Monday the man whose body was found on the Appalachian Trail in northern Somerset County on Friday is 51-year-old Michael Guerette of Cherry Grove, N.Y.

Autopsy results are pending from the State Medical Examiner’s Office, which conducted an autopsy on his body this morning, according to a news release issued by Stephen McCausland, the spokesman for the Maine Bureau of Public Safety.

Police say they are investigating the death as “unexplained” and will await the Medical Examiner’s findings, McCausland stated in his release.

Wardens initially said it appeared that Guerette fell and hit his head.

Guerette had been hiking a portion of trail in Maine for the past two weeks and was hiking alone.

Guerette’s body was found by fellow hikers along the trail near Carry Place Township on Friday morning.
