TOPSHAM — Ward MacDonald and Dr. Ellen MacPhee, internationally acclaimed masters of the Scottish-style fiddle and small pipes, respectively, will perform on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 19-20, at the Maine Highland Games.
The two Prince Edward Island musicians will then play at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage on Sunday, Aug. 21.
MacDonald and MacPhee will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Topsham Fairgrounds. Curtain at Skye is at 7 p.m., with a preshow jam session starting at 6 o’clock.
MacDonald’s playing reflects four generations of family fiddling and is spiced with a blend of Cape Breton, Acadian and Irish influences. Also an emerging composer, his tunes have been recorded by Andrea Beaton, Colin Grant, Chrissy Crowley and Vishten.
His first solo recording, “Ask Her To Dance,” slated for release in the fall, will feature a variety of original and traditional compositions. Capturing the energy of a live performance, the 12 tracks will include lively medleys and heartfelt airs arranged in collaboration with pianist Richard Wood, guitarist Louis-Charles Vigneau and MacPhee.
MacDonald has played at concerts, festivals and square dances across Atlantic Canada and as far as Cuba and the Bahamas. He has been a regular at the Maine Fiddle Camp and has taught and played at camps in New Brunswick, Vermont, Colorado and the Yukon. He completed a tour of Maine schools this past May. His method includes guided ear training aided by singing tunes, dancing demonstrations, marching and sheet music.
MacPhee is a proponent of a bag-piping tradition geared for dance halls and audiences that like to groove. Her repertoire draws on the dance rhythms of Prince Edward Island, Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton traditions. Her arrangements combine Scottish small-pipes with fiddles, pianos, guitars, banjos and other instruments.
She has performed throughout Eastern Canada and the United States at venues including the Celtic Colours International Festival and the Festival of Small Halls on Prince Edward Island. She has taught at the Prince Edward Island Fiddle Camp, the Gaelic College, Hamish Moore’s Piping School in Richmond, Vt., and the Piper’s Gathering in Killington, Vt.
Tickets are $15 for the Friday night concert at the Maine Highland Games and at the door at Skye Theatre on Sunday. The Saturday performance is included with admission to the Games. Skye Theater is at 2 Highland Drive off Winter Hill Road and U.S. Route 2. For reservations, call Skye at 562-4445. The concerts are presented by New England Celtic Arts.
