RUMFORD — Malia Letourneau has always wanted to be a teacher. As she was growing up, her younger sister was her “student.”

Now, as a recent graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington in the early childhood program, she begins her teaching career at Holy Savior Catholic School.

She’s the newest addition to the small school’s staff. Letourneau, 22, from Fairfield, replaces longtime Holy Savior teacher Bobbi Ridge.

She’ll be teaching about 10 preschoolers and six kindergartners.

“I couldn’t decide whether I wanted pre-k or kindergarten. This is both, so it is perfect for me,” she said.

When she was first hired, she was a little nervous, she said.

“A lot of people are helping me, and ask if I need anything or want any help,” she said from her sunny and colorful first-floor classroom as she prepared for opening day Aug. 31.

On that day, she’ll get to know the children by playing games and music with them.

Preschoolers age 3 attend for a half day. The 4- and 5–year-olds have the option of attending half-day or all day. Kindergartners attend a full day of classes.

Teaching Principal Barbara Pelletier, who is beginning her 40th year at the school on Lincoln Avenue, said 54 youngsters from prekindergarten through grade seven will begin the school year. None have enrolled in the eighth grade this year, she said.

Six teachers, including Pelletier, and a librarian provide education for the children. Teachers’ workshop day is set for Aug. 24.

Openings are still available and registration may be made by calling the school at 364-2528. Scholarships and tuition assistance are available for those who qualify, Pelletier said.

In addition to Letourneau, Dawn Leahy, who will serve as half-time secretary, is a new staff member this year. Her predecessor, Vickie Kuhl, who had also taught half-time, will become a full-time teacher.

Also new this year are efforts to create a Parent Teacher Association for the school.

Pelletier said several parents who are active in the school have begun planning the establishment of the organization.

An open house will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29. That will be preceded by a supper for parents of enrolled students.

For Letourneau, she looks at the upcoming year as a very positive step in her career.

“I’m excited,” she said.
