WINTHROP — The Winthrop Red Sox rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and pitcher, Eric Palleschi retired the side in order in the ninth to finish off a 3-2 complete-game victory over the Downeast Dodgers in the Pine Tree League senior baaseball playoffs.
The Red Sox rally came with two outs. Matt McCarthy and Dave Ricker Jr. doubled back-to-back down the left field line, setting the stage for Brett Witherell’s eventual game-winning hit.
Dodgers pitcher Brian Carver held Winthrop to only three runs over his previous 16 innings of work prior to the comeback.
Downeast took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a unearned run before Palleschi slammed the door on the Dodgers, allowing two batters to reach base over the final five frames while striking out six and not giving up a free pass in the game.
Witherell, Palleschi and Ricker Jr. all repeated at the plate for Winthrop, as did Eric Matzell, Max Arsenault and Eddie Crocker for the Dodgers.
Winthrop will travel to Winslow Sunday to take on the top -seeded Green Wave.
