FREEPORT — Grammy-winning rock group America, a cornerstone of 1970s Top 40 and FM rock radio, will perform at 7:30 p.m.  Saturday, Sept. 3, at L.L. Bean’s Discovery Park.

The group, founded in England in 1971, rose to stardom with two No. 1 hits, “Horse With No Name” and “Sister Golden Hair,” which earned a Best New Artist Grammy Award and multiplatinum records.

Some of America’s other best-known tunes include “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t Cross The River,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” and “I Need You,”

By the mid-’70s, conflicts among band mates, coupled with hectic touring and recording schedules, led to Dan Peek’s departure from the group in 1977. Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell carried on as a duo, renewing their dedication to songwriting and hitting the pop charts in 1982 with their smash single, “You Can Do Magic.”

This year, America is celebrating its 40th anniversary of chart-topping music and,  in July, released its latest album, “Back Pages,” on the Entertainment One Music label. The album is a collection of interpretations of songs by Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Simon & Garfunkel, the Beach Boys, Jimmy Webb, Mark Knopfler and others.
