LEWISTON — Singer-songwriter Kate Schrock, proclaimed “one of the best unsigned artists in the U.S.” by Billboard Talent Net, will perform on Aug. 26 at Dufresne Plaza as part of the fourth Friday ArtWalk.
Schrock will bring her repertoire of jazz, rock gospel, reggae and dance hall music to the plaza, adjacent to 84 Lisbon St., at 6 p.m. If it rains, the free concert will be moved to Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library on Lisbon Street.
Schrock found inspiration for the musical and lyrical themes of her latest album, “Soul of Invocation,” while recording in Jamaica between 2004 and 2006, accompanied by good friend Glen DaCosta, longtime horn player for Bob Marley and The Wailers.
Her vision for the album was further influenced and transformed by eye-opening experiences she had several months later while traveling to the upper Amazon River basin in Ecuador. She was on a study tour with Heifer International, a development organization founded by her grandfather, Dan West.
Lyrically, Schrock takes a direct approach when tackling such provocative topics as war, injustice, poverty and the ills of commercial over-development. But a big part of her songwriting talent is her seemingly effortless ability to inject a subtext of calmness into her songs.
“Soul of Invocation,” Schrock’s sixth independent release on her own Kakelane Music label, was co-produced by Grammy-nominated engineer/producer Steve Drown and features her brother Nate Schrock, frontman for the alt-country band The Coming Grass, and his guitarist, Steve Jones.
