MEXICO — The Recreation Department could finally have a new director come Tuesday, Aug. 23.

That’s when the Recreation Committee will pitch its recommendation to selectmen in the Calvin P. Lyons Mexico Town Hall, Town Manager John Madigan said Friday morning.

Greg Arsenault, the town’s longtime recreation director, resigned June 28 after voters at town meeting narrowly approved the Recreation Department budget. The majority agreed on the selectmen’s recommendation to reduce the full-time recreation director from 32 hours to 20 hours per week and eliminated benefits, saving the town about $12,000.

Madigan said Arsenault then resigned.

In a letter to the editor published July 13 in the Rumford Falls Times, Arsenault wrote that he didn’t resign.

He said he was “forced to get done” due to the board’s downsizing decision.

After Arsenault’s departure, the Recreation Committee advertised the position.

Committee member Mabel Merrill said Friday evening that they received a few applications and will meet Monday, Aug. 22, to decide who to recommend to selectmen for approval Tuesday night.

Among the other agenda items are discussions on an offer for the Yanush Drive property; setting a special town meeting to take money from the undesignated fund balance; the C. H. Stevenson estimate for Backkingdom Road; and estimates for the highway garage roof and recreation building roof.

Selectmen are also expected to approve Sue Milligan as the animal control officer for the next 28 weeks, and convene an executive session to discuss Police Department union contract negotiations.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.
