HANOVER — A Newry woman was hospitalized Monday after her vehicle and another collided on Route 2.

Merlee Page, 81, of Newry, was taken to Rumford Hospital with cuts to her face and body and a possible broken leg, Maine State Police Trooper Dan Hanson said. As of 6 p.m., she was being treated in the emergency room, a hospital spokesman said.

The other driver, Casandra Yasko, 19, of Bethel was treated at the scene, Hanson said.

Yasko was driving east near the Mills Road intersection at about 1:38 p.m. and signaling to turn left into a driveway when Page’s 2002 Kia Sportage hit the back of her 2011 Jeep Liberty, the trooper said.

“She had her blinker on to turn but the Kia never slowed down,” said Victoria Monsalve of Rumford, who witnessed the accident. “I don’t think the driver saw the blinker.”

Merlee tried to swerve out of the way but caught the rear driver’s side of the Jeep and both vehicles spun.

Monsalve said she dialed 911 and then offered assistance to the drivers.

Both vehicles received extensive damage.

Oxford County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Holland and Rumford Fire Department assisted at the scene.
