MEXICO — A severe thunderstorm that moved through New Hampshire and most of Western Maine on Sunday night caused power outages and tree damage in Oxford County. One downed tree forced the closure of Route 2 in Mexico for a number of hours.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning Sunday night. Monday the weather service reported that winds had reached 60 mph and rainfall in Norway was measured at 2.59 inches overnight.

Gail Rice with Central Maine Power Co. said that 960 homes in Oxford County lost power starting at around 7 p.m. Power was restored to most of the homes by 3 a.m.

“Most of the outages were due to downed trees and lightning strikes,” she said.

Route 2 in Mexico was closed at 6 p.m. for a few hours due to a tree that had fallen near Mitchell Avenue. The large tree blocked traffic and was later dragged behind the town hall. Chief Gary Wentzell of the Mexico Fire Department said the tree did not cause damage to any businesses or vehicles.

The National Weather Service was also investigating reports of a possible tornado in Canaan, N.H.  The weather service reported Sullivan, Grafton and Carroll counties in New Hampshire were among the hardest hit. The storm front had weakened somewhat as it reached Western Maine and finally moved out to sea by morning.
