OGUNQUIT — Tom Rush, who helped shape the folk revival in the 1960s and the renaissance of the 1980s-1990s, will perform on Sunday, Sept. 11, at Jonathan’s Restaurant.
Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound. Speaking of the folk legend, James Taylor told Rolling Stone, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences.”
Country music star Garth Brooks has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences.
Rush has long championed emerging artists. His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and James Taylor; and, in more recent years, his Club 47 concerts have taken artists such as Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin to wider audiences.
Rush began his musical career in the early 1960s, playing Boston-area clubs while a Harvard student. Club 47 was the flagship of the coffeehouse fleet, and he was soon holding down a weekly spot there, learning from legendary artists who came to play. He released two albums by the time he graduated.
When not on tour, Rush lives in Wyoming. He is doing what he loves, and what audiences love him for — writing and playing, passionately and tenderly.
“This is another artist that I feel like I just have to have back each year,” said Jonathan West, owner of Jonathan’s Restaurant. Rush has played at Jonathan’s for the past five years.
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets, starting at $37.50, are availableat www.jonathansrestaurant.com. Jonathan’s is at 92 Bourne Lane, just around the corner from the Ogunquit Playhouse. For more information, call 646-4777.
