LEWISTON — Members of the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council gathered Aug. 11 for orientation regarding their 2011-2012 year of service.

At the close of the day’s activities, getting the word out about all that’s going on in Lewiston through public awareness efforts was of particular interest to the group. That sentiment occurred following an economic development Powerpoint presentation by Lincoln Jeffers, assistant to the city administrator.

Member Kenzi Masselli noted, “I wasn’t aware of half of the things in that Powerpoint, and I’m involved in the community. So, if I’m not aware, I know tons of my peers don’t know about these exciting things.” Member Marissa Zanoni was particularly interested in the forthcoming Lofts at Bates Mill.

At the close of the day, members voted on their focus for the coming year. In addition to public awareness effort, three other areas of focus will be learning more about a Pierce Street Park Enhancement Project, having a “Showcase Your Talent” event for local youth, and recycling.

As part of the orientation, City Administrator Ed Barrett provided an overview of municipal government, highlighting numerous municipal services. He also referenced the current focus on developing Lewiston’s riverfront, and encouraged the youth council’s input.

Mayor Laurent F. Gilbert Sr., and City Council Liaison John Butler also met with the group, encouraging them to be “leaders of tomorrow.”

Butler also presented LYAC members with an opportunity to sponsor a mayoral debate in October. After learning of multiple candidates currently interested in the mayor’s seat, LYAC member Shuaib Naji stated that he’s really looking forward to LYAC hosting such an event.

The LYAC will hold its first meeting in September.
