PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Maine Department of Marine Resources will be getting help monitoring efforts to revive the populations of the endangered Atlantic salmon in the state.

A $1.1 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will be used by scientists to count adult and juvenile salmon populations as well as conduct study how successfully they are reproducing and the quality of salmon habitat in Maine.

Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree says the long term goal is to get the Atlantic salmon off the endangered species list so anglers will once again be able to fish for the species.
