Card leagues
LEWISTON — Card players are wanted for a league that is to start Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Multi Purpose Center with cribbage at 9 a.m. and pinochle at 1 p.m. Pitch will start on Sept. 6 at 1 p.m.

Church gives grants
MINOT — The Minot United Methodist Church Board of Trustees has announced the 2011-12 recipients of the Hartwell Pratt Educational Grant.
Each year, church members and members of their immediate family are eligible to apply for this grant, which is given in memory of Mr. Pratt and his interest in education. Six grants of $1000 each were awarded to Katherine Hofferberth, Valerie Foster, Ethan Hartman, Andrew Hartman and Richard Griffith.
Bridge results
LEWISTON — The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club met on Aug. 23 at the Multi-Purpose Center. Winners in Flight A were: 1st, Fred Letourneau and Sherry Hinckley; 2nd, Kay Bagwell and Lucille Theriault; 3rd, Mary Anne Trafton and Kathleen Burden; 4th, Jackie Deschene and Marie Jeanne Lesperance; 5th, Marta Clements and Nancy Farmer.
Flight B winners were: 1st, Mary Anne Trafton and Kathleen Burden; 2nd, Jackie Deschene and Mary Jeanne Lesperance. Winners in Flight C were Mary Anne Trafton and Kathleen Burden. Another game will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30.
The club also met on Aug. 24 at Schooner Estates in Auburn. Winners were: 1st, Claire Lyons and Lucille Theriault; 2nd, Mike and Pat Quin; 3rd, David Lock and Jeanine Kivus. Another game will be played at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31 at Schooner Estates. A partner is guaranteed at all local games. For further information, call Lucille Theriault at 783-0431.
Retired educators
AUBURN — The September meeting of the Androscoggin County Retired Educators’ Association will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the High Street Congregational Church on High Street. The business meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. The speaker will be Patrick Williams, director of safety and volunteers at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Lunch will be served by the ladies of the church. Lunch will consist of homemade macaroni and cheese, sliced ham, fresh vegetables and homemade pies. Turkey may be substituted for ham. The cost of lunch is $10.
AREA is continuing to support the STEP program at Lewiston High School for homeless teens. For those who wish to support this program should bring their items to the meeting. Items include school supplies, snacks and personal care items.
AREA meets five times per year, in September, October, November, March and April. Dues are $10 per year for retired educators and $6 for spouses. Educators need not have taught in Androscoggin County; all retired educators are welcome.

Chicken barbecue
LISBON FALLS — Knights of Columbus Council 2358 will hold a chicken barbecue at noon Sunday, Sept. 11, at the picnic grounds on Route 196.
The price for adults in advance is $7, at the grounds $8; children 10 and under are $4.
Tickets can be purchased at the Holy Trinity parish office during regular business hours, before or after the 4 p.m. mass Saturday and the 10:30 a.m. mass Sunday or from council members.
