100 years ago, 1911

The largest rally in the campaign to retain the Prohibitory Amendment in the constitution of the State of Maine, since Lieut. Richmond Paerson Hobson spoke in City Hall, was held in that place last evening. The large hall was more than half filled. There were four speakers, each of whom was closely followed. The speaker of the evening was Mary Harris Armor, president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, of Georgia.

50 years ago, 1961

A masked gunman held up a Lincoln Street store proprietor late yesterday afternoon and fled with between $400 and $500 in cash.

Ernest Thibault, 79-year-old owner of the Thibault & Faucher jewelry store at 141 Lincoln St., was held at bay as the gunman grabbed the cash from a drawer, stuffed it into his pockets and fled.

Thibault, alone in the store when the gunman entered shortly before 5 0’clock, told a newsman that the stolen money was in $10 and $5 bills.

25 years ago, 1986

The waiting is over for Lewiston High School. Richard M. Sykes of Bridgton has accepted the job as school principal.

Sykes, currently the principal of Lake Region High School, told School Superintendent Robert V. Connors Friday morning that he would take the job that was offered five days ago.

Connors said he was pleased with the decision.

Sykes will begin his new post a week after Labor Day. Until then, LHS Assistant Principal John Bouchles will be acting principal.
