DIXFIELD — Bells at the Congregational Church will toll for one hour Sept. 11 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks.

They begin ringing at 8:46 a.m., the time American Airlines flight 11 hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City in 2001.

Church trustee Beverly Glover said invitations to the 10 a.m. church service have been sent to all local police, fire and EMS departments.

“This is something we have done now for several years to show appreciation to our first responders, but this is the first year the Sunday service has fallen on 9/11,” she said.

Glover said there has always been a good turnout of first responders and the church is hoping for the same this year. She said there may be a conflict with firefighters attending the 48th Maine State Federation of Firefighters convention in Waterville.

Waterville Fire Department will host a three-day firefighters convention and 9/11 memorial service starting Sept. 9.

The church will host a luncheon after the service. Anyone with questions about the event may contact Glover at 562-7083.
