YARMOUTH — Dorothy M. Bowie, 97, formerly of Durham, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 27, at Bay Square, where she had been in residence for the past year.
Dorothy was born on Jan. 28, 1914, to Leon R. and Almeda Libby Bowie in Durham. She attended Durham schools and was a graduate of Edward Little High School. She went on to receive her teaching certificate from Farmington Normal School and later her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Boston University. She was a school teacher for over 40 years here in Maine as well as Massachusetts.
After retirement Dorothy stayed busy tending gardens at the farm and spending time at her cottage in Harpswell. Aunt Dort was somewhat of a Renaissance gal in her love of travel, as well as being an accomplished artist. She loved the farm in Durham and shared that affection with her many nieces and nephews over the years. You had to pass a quiz on tree and bird identification on every walk with her.
Dorothy was a member of the Durham Congregational Church and the MEA.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Alton (Eben), Louis (Luke), Philip and Leon Jr. (Beanie); as well as her sisters, Alice and Louise.
She is survived by her sister, Margaret Rendell of Yarmouth; and brothers, Frank M. Bowie and his wife, Lucille of Durham and Maynard M. Bowie and his wife, Glenice of Wales. In addition, there are many nephews and nieces who will miss her terribly.
