AUGUSTA — “The Lenny Breau Project,” a celebration of the guitar legend’s music, will be presented on Sunday, Sept. 18, as part of the University of Maine at Augusta’s Concerts at Jewett series.
Performing will be master guitarist and singer-songwriter Denny Breau along with Brad Terry, clarinet/whistler; Steve Grover, drums; Tony Gaboury, guitar; and Fitz Jenkins, bass.
The concert will be at 2 p.m. at UMA Jewett Auditorium.
Three years ago, Grover conceived the idea for the Lenny Breau Project. He poured over Breau’s CDs and recast his arrangements for a jazz quintet. Especially noteworthy are arrangements of “Autumn Leaves” and another comfortable jazz standard with 23 key changes. The program is a combination of music and commentary by loving friends.
Breau, born in Auburn, was a guitar player and music educator known for blending many styles of music, including jazz, country, classical and flamenco guitar. Inspired by country guitarists like Chet Atkins, Breau used finger-style techniques not often used in jazz guitar.
In 1967, recordings of Breau’s playing from “The Lenny Breau Show” found their way into Atkins’ hands. The ensuing friendship resulted in Breau’s first two LP issues, “Guitar Sounds from Lenny Breau” and “The Velvet Touch of Lenny Breau Live!” on RCA.
Concert tickets are $10, $5 for students, 12 and younger admitted free. Tickets are available at Pat’s Pizza in Augusta, Apple Valley Books in Winthrop and at the door. Also, call 621-3551 or email [email protected]. For more information, visit www.concertsatjewett.com.
