FARMINGTON — More than 2,000 customers were without power Sunday evening after powerful thunderstorms took down trees and lines in the foothills region of Western Maine.
Central Maine Power Co. reported that of the 2,164 customers without power, about 1,670 were in Franklin County and 129 were in Oxford County. The remaining outages in Western Maine were in Somerset and Piscataquis counties.
A dispatcher with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department reported Sunday afternoon that several trees and power lines were down in the Farmington area. Severe weather moved through the region around 3 p.m. Sunday.
Meteorologist Eric Schwibs with the National Weather Service said the storms developed and became severe in the Western Maine foothills region. He said the storms produced heavy winds and some reports of small hail.
Schwibs said the bigger concern comes Monday when showers — not necessarily severe storms — could bring a lot of rain to the region of the state hard hit last week by Tropical Storm Irene. A flood watch is already in effect for Oxford County and portions of Franklin and Somerset counties through Tuesday morning.
